Spring Is In The Air, A Picture Post

Ok ok- I know Spring isn't officially until March but if you live in Texas, you know it goes from cool to HOT quick around here. The last week or so has been wonderful! Perfect temperatures and so much sunlight. I love weather like this. I have a very hard time doing anything when it's colder than 50 degrees outside. I need sunlight and a warm breeze to function and that's exactly what we have had the past week or two. With Texas weather, you kind of have to take advantage of good weather as it comes because the next day could be the complete opposite. So, we've been spending a majority of our time outdoors. That's where Madi is happiest too. I am also working on a project that I will show y'all in about a week, so look for that soon! For now, I hope you enjoy this "picture post." :)

It is like pulling teeth trying to get her to look AT the camera, so I'm pretty glad I at least got one close up ;)

Like I said, stay tuned the next week or so for a debut of a special project I'm working on. If you're an outdoorsy person, this means YOU! :)

Journal Entry, #1

I haven't posted a journal entry in quite a while so I thought that now would be a good time. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the new words and phrases, and the things you learn to do on a day-to-day basis. When you do something that I want to write down, I jot it down in my NotePad on my phone. About once a week, I copy it all down to your journal. Here's some little tidbits from the latest pages of your journal.

You are TERRIFIED of bugs. Of all kinds and varieties. If you think or suspect that there's one on the ground, you will climb to the highest point in the room within seconds to avoid it getting near you. You also do this squeal that is SO girly.

You're starting to say new things, that really show that you aren't a baby anymore. Your phrases aren't as simplistic as they used to be. Instead of smiling at Papaw when he says something funny, you say, "Silly papaw!" And giggle. Another example... Yesterday I asked you if you needed to potty. Usually you'd say no and keep going with what you're doing. This time you said "no mom, I'm fine." I got a glimpse of your teenage years there for a second. Scary.

You also suddenly know the difference between girls and boys. You'll rattle off about how Papaw, Bubba, and Daddy are boys, and that Nonna, Granny, and Nanny are girls. You used to be confused by the concept and now you act like its no big deal!

You have this fake laugh that is hilarious! You can tell its forced. When you say something you think is funny, you do it and hold your mouth like it's so funny you can't even stand it. It's the cutest thing. You also bend over halfway and put your hands on your knees. I think you got that from your Daddy.

You really are a girl. You talk nonstop. I can always tell right when you fall asleep because you finally stop talking. You'll mumble as your drifting to sleep. You talk in the car, when we're shopping, while you're eating, on the potty, when we play outside, etc etc etc.

You say "okay" a lot. Not as an answer though, you say it as a question. Like you'll say, "I'm going to play with my babies, okay?" Or "I'm going to read the book by myself, okay?" It cracks me up.

You are getting really good at colors also. Your favorites are purple and yellow. Also pink. You point them out wherever we go and giggle to yourself.

You love Brody and want to baby him. You also reach out and ask to hold him or change his diaper.

You are also so aware. You told me the other day, "I warm, take my temp-a-sure." Then you lifted up your shirt and put your hand on your belly. Or how you tell me, "we go to the park tomorrow?" You already are forming a concept of time which I think is pretty amazing.

It's strange how quickly time passes and how you grow everyday. You grow on the outside most definitely, but your little brain is growing faster than Mommy can keep up!

The Joys of Motherhood

Motherhood is a complicated road to go down. Here you have this sweet little person that you love more than anything in the world. Yet kids are unpredictable and can do things that leave you, for lack of a better word, speechless. Sometimes it's in a good way, though sometimes it isn't. I think that after the past few months, I'll share some of mine with you.

We were at the park today, and I was swinging Madi. She was talking about random things, babbling on in her toddler talk like a normal girl. Then all of a sudden she stares behind me in astonishment and yells, "HE'S NAKED! HE'S NAKED, MOMMY!" So I quickly look behind me and there's a man jogging on the sidewalk about 10 feet from us. He stares at her and sort of smirks at me and quickly jogs away. He had long running shorts on but no shirt. For the next hour at the park she would randomly say "he was NAKED" and Mom's would stare in half amusement half curiosity.

Then later, we were having lunch at Chickfila when she decided she wanted to take her pants off. She was determined to take them off. Luckily my Mom had her and we both convinced her not to strip down in public. But that wasn't without shrieking as loud as she could until everyone was staring. You know, the amusement curiosity stare I mentioned.

For some reason, she also has a new word. "Turd." She uses it correctly too, I might add. We were in the car and all of a sudden she yells, "Mommy, you're a turd!" and then giggled to herself. She obviously heard someone say it and it was amusing to her to repeat it. She also likes to tell people they "smell like poooop."

The other day she called me into her room with an uneasy voice. So I quickly went into her room to see what was the matter. She held out her hand and rubbed something gooey on my hand while saying, "EW!" I, being the mother of a toddler, just took it from her and put it on a napkin and placed it in the trash. Then I got curious, I said, "Baby, what was that?" and she nonshalantly replied, "A booger. From my nose."

But then, they do things that leave you speechless in the best way possible. Like the other night when she woke up in the middle of the night. I stumbled sleepily into her room and kneeled by her bed. She looked up at me and said, "Mommy, hold my hand." So I gave her my hand and she placed it in the middle of hers and fell asleep. It reminded me of when she was tiny. I used to just sit and watch her sleep, thinking it was the most angelic thing I'd ever seen.

It also made me think... Wait... What? That little helpless baby has turned into this hilarious toddler who constantly keeps me on my toes. But, that's part of the joy of motherhood... right?

New Experiences, and a video

Today marked the beginning of a new semester, which means that I had brand new classes to go to. But also, Madi started at a new daycare too. I felt really bad making her leave her old daycare, but I felt that it was best she went somewhere else. I guess that's part of parenting, right? I wanted her to be somewhere where she would learn, instead of just play all day. Hopefully, this new daycare will help with that.

I was worried how she would react to me leaving her somewhere new, but like always, she completely surprised me. She didn't even cry. She went right to her teacher and let me go. I just KNEW she would throw a fit and cry for me. HA.

When I picked her up, she was sleeping. I woke her and she went right into my arms. She said, "Hi mommy!" and showed me where her cubby was to get her stuff. Her teacher told me that she had a great day, and that she was a very good listener. On the way home, she couldn't stop talking about how she "had a good day, mommy!" I'm so relieved.

her daily report

snapped at a red light while she was talking about her day.

Here's a little video. This was about an hour after I picked her up from school.

"Do you want to go back to school?"
"No."
(lol)

I'm hoping when she goes back Thursday, it will be as easy. But like I said, she is always surprising me and keeping me on my toes ;)

Roots to Branches

I had a post scheduled for today, but after yesterday, I decided it could wait.

We went for a play date with my best friend and her nephew at a nearby park yesterday. But let me start off by telling you about Holly, for those that don't know. We met in 7th grade dance and have been sisters ever since. I can honestly say that she is the closest person to my heart that doesn't share my own blood. She has been there for me no matter what happened and I can't imagine not having her there to talk to for hours and hours. My best memories growing up involve her, and I'm so happy to say that it will continue on that way.

But back to our day... we spent the day with her and her nephew Izzy. We have had several play dates before but for some reason, this one struck me the most. I think it's the age that they both are now. He's 3 and she's 2. They are at the age where they can actually talk to each other and have a good time together, but still do their own thing. We went to a park in the Woodlands and we played for awhile. Then Izzy said, "Let's just go on an adventure!" and so we all went walking into the "forest" as he called it, which was just the woods behind the park. Madi had so much fun throwing sticks into the water with him and walking along the pathways holding his hand. At one point, she let go of his hand to come and hold mine and he said, "she let go" and had a frown on his face. It melted my heart. It all just reminded me of being so young and carefree with my best friend.

I remember walking in the halls with Holly in high school (such a long time ago ;)) and now my daughter and her nephew are holding hands walking together. It just gets me.

I have so many pictures of us from years ago, but I'm posting my favorite picture of us together ever. I love you so much.

26 Rainy Day Activities for Toddlers

I have the hardest time with finding things to do on rainy days. And boy is it raining here! On pretty days, we always spend our time around town or at parks. But, when its raining, I have to somehow find a way to entertain Madi, who hates being cooped up inside (can't say I blame her...) So I've searched all around and I've compiled a list of my favorite indoor activities for little ones. I hope it helps. If you have an idea that isn't listed below- share it!

1. Make-overs! Lipstick, blush, nail polish, the works! Works for girls of all ages.
2. Flashlight tag. Turn all of the lights off and use flashlights to look for each other.
3. Bath time. My never-fails-to-calm-down-a-toddler activity.
4. Sensory projects or tubs. Use rice, pipe cleaners, marshmallows, etc.
5. Build a fort or tent. Use the kitchen or dining room table and a king size sheet!
6. Dance party to music on the stereo.
7. Art time. Use crayons, stencils, paint, glue, and if you're brave enough... Glitter. For an easier clean-up, put them in the center of a sheet and then when their done just gather it up and empty the glitter out over a bathtub. Wash it right down the drain. (Put the kids in there too ;)) The messy stuff will keep them entertained forever!
8. Play clean-up. Sing the song "clean up, clean up, everybody clean up. Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share..." Singing the song together makes it even more fun for them. Madi loves to sing with me.
9. Stack Tupperware and cups of various sizes and colors. Talk about and go over the different colors and how some fit into each other and some don't. Some are tall/short, big/small, etc.
10. Make music. Use wooden spoons and various kinds of bowls. Do quiet noises and LOUD noises.
11. Make your kitchen and pantry a toddler friendly grocery store. Give them a basket and allow them to collect produce and boxed goods from a section of food you've set out. Give them a few coins and be the register lady.
12. PlayDoh. Make animals and shapes. Mix colors and see how they look. Mash it together between your hands, make a ball, etc.
13. Play with shaving cream. It will blow their mind! Let little boys shave like Daddy. Bathtub is best...
14. Throw a party! Draw pictures to hang on the wall, hang streamers, turn on party music, dress up, blow up balloons, bake a cake, etc. This is awesome if you know of a rainy day in advance. It takes some preparation but they'll be entertained for hours with it.
15. Bake together. Let them lay out cookie dough on a baking sheet, or stir up brownie batter.
16. Play dress up in Mommy's clothes, heels, and scarves and model it for you. Take their picture like you're paparazzi.
17. Scavenger hunt. Hide items around the house like balls, cups, the remote, etc. Have them venture through the house to find each item. Works well for older toddlers.
18. Play with bubbles. Doing this in the bathtub is best. Wet hands can catch the bubbles and they float on top of the water.
19. Let your toddler match the bottle/cup to its lid.
20. Create various shaker bottles. Fill some with rice, beads, beans, and also things like liquid soap, paint, etc.
21. Create an "indoor sandbox." Fill a long and shallow bin with rice and throw in sand toys like shovels, buckets, and strainers. Hide toys like toy dinosaurs and soldiers, wooden blocks, etc in the "sand" for them to find.
22. Create a library. This takes a little preparation too. Go to your local kids bookstore and get some books out of the bargain bin. They don't have to be books you know your little one will love. Half of the fun of this is playing library. Use those books and some books your kiddo loves from home and place them on a shelf. Create a library card and let them "check out" the books they want. Set up a little table for them to read at. For bigger kids, make them sign the books out on a sheet of paper and give them a due date to bring them back.
23. Let them make their own lunch. Give them a platter of different things like fruit, sandwich stuff (deli meat, cheese, pickles, lettuce), block cheese, chips. Let them build their lunch to their liking.
24. Have some quiet time. In a world where days are full of social networking, iPhones, errands, and completely hectic days, sometimes what you need to do is power down. Sit in your childs room for an hour or two and do whatever he/she wants to do. Uninterrupted. Read a book, put together a puzzle together, play daycare with her stuffed animals, throw a ball with him. Anything. If you give them that undivided attention, they will probably entertain themselves while you do a few loads of laundry and cook dinner later. It's worth a shot.
25. Make ice-cream sundaes. Let them choose what to put on it, fruit, chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, nuts, etc.
26. If all else fails, go outside (in calmer weather) and run in the rain with them. A memory that will always stick with me no matter how old I am is getting to go outside and stomp in puddles and play in the rain with my cousins when I was young. Just remember... a little dirt and water never hurt anyone ;)

Currently.

Watching: Madi grow. In every way it seems, she's growing and growing. Her speech is improving by the day. She now uses "him" and "her" in the correct context now. Also, she's been eating like crazy the past couple of days and it's definitely a welcome sight. She has always been a picky eater. I love to sit and eat with her and her ask for seconds, which never happens. Growth spurt, maybe?

Listening to: I just got a new iPad so I'm adding songs to it left and right. Ed Sheeran, The Fray, Josh Abbott Band, Eli Young Band, The Dean's List, Chevelle, and many more albums. I like a little of everything.

Planning: A weekend trip to Frisco, TX to watch the SHSU playoff game (my Dad is an alumni there and I'll be attending in the fall). We're staying for two nights and are going with my parents, my brother and sister in law, and my neice. It'll be nice to be away for a little while and explore with Madi in a new area. Other stuff that's been on my mind: spring time! I hate the cold weather and can't wait for the warmer temperatures to return! I'm looking forward to biking and running with Madi again when our face won't go numb within a few minutes.

Thinking about: "Be as you wish to seem." -Socrates. It's simple, yet I'm constantly reminding myself that little phrase.

Reading: Ahh... 50 shades of Grey. I'm a little late to jump on the bandwagon because when the books became big, the only book I had time to read was my 1000 page anatomy textbook. But now that I have some time, I thought I'd read them and I'm now on the third book and can't wait to see how it ends. I think I'll read something a little lighter for my next book though. I find myself exhausted when I'm done reading, lol. So much drama! Do you have any suggestions on what to read next?

Making me happy: this blog, Madi saying "I love you, mommy" when I tell her I love her, starbucks in the cold weather, making lists of new years resolutions, greek gods yogurt with dark choco chips, being able to spend the weekend with family, football, sweet potatoes, Cassie Bjork's blog, seeing Madi's face light up when she discovers something new, hot epsom salt baths, sleeping in late on cold mornings, and hopefully slowly easing into the warmer months. (winter go away!)

Happy New Year! & we're back!

Happy New Year! Madi and I hope that everyone had a fantastic holiday. We've been taking a little breather and dealing with some things going on here. I really hate to bob in and out of the blogger world but it was best for us (me) to take a break from it all. But I'm happy to say that things are returning to normal and Madi & Me should be running like usual from now on.

I hope that I didn't lose too many followers from taking my little vacation. This holiday has been hectic in all sorts of ways, as I'm sure it was for everyone. It seems like it snuck up on us this year. In all events, I sincerely hope that everyone was surrounded with people they love for the holiday.

The break definitely gave me some time to think about things that are important to me. This blog is important to me because it allows me to share and document Madi's childhood, while also letting me share my thoughts about things. One of my resolutions this year is to make sure to not let this blog fall through the cracks even though my life may get hectic. I absolutely love being able to go back and read posts from the past and relish in it all. So, I'm going to do my best to remain HERE.

But for now... I'll share some pictures from the past month or so. Look for my posts every Tuesday and Friday.

I can't believe it's 2013!

The barista at Starbucks a couple of weeks ago made her her own special treat.

Ikea trips.

She loves to feed Brody.

I love this picture so much. We were decorating (a little late) for Christmas and she was just so happy. She is going to love the Christmas season when she's older, I can already tell.

Last year, she cried HARD sitting in Santa's lap. I was hesitant to take her this year despite her pleadings for me to take her. She would say, "Ina go see Santa, Mommy!" So I took her and look at that. A smile!

Booboo!

Christmas morning.

Her first experience with PlayDoh and she LOVES it.

Santa brought an iPad Mini this year. We have so much fun on it.

:)

For now, I'm going to sit in the quiet and write in Madi's journal.
Goodnight.
